Abstract

Sports psychology is a significant factor in sport because it can affect an individual’s performance, and even their psychological well-being. Motivation has long been associated with sports engagement. Moreover, self-esteem plays a significant influence on an athlete's success and maintenance of psychological well-being. However, no research has been performed to understand the relationship between motivation and self-esteem among recreational badminton players. The purpose of this study was to investigate relationship between motivation and self-esteem based of gender. A total of 132 players (73 male, 59 females with a mean age of 23.61 ± 3.55 years were recruited in Kuala Lumpur. The Sport Motivation Scale, a 28-item self-report questionnaire measuring seven subscales (i.e., intrinsic motivation to know, intrinsic motivation to accomplish, intrinsic motivation to experience stimulation, extrinsic motivation to identify regulation, extrinsic motivation for introjection regulation, extrinsic motivation to external regulation, and amotivation) and The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, a 10-item self-report questionnaire was administered. Results showed significant correlation between Intrinsic Motivation and Self-Esteem, (rs = 0.54, p = 0.00) and Extrinsic Motivation and Self-Esteem, (rs = 0.27, p = 0.001). There were no significant gender differences between Intrinsic Motivation (U = 2114, p = .85), Extrinsic Motivation (U = 2121, p = .88) and Self-Esteem (U = 2141, p = .95). In conclusion, our study demonstrated motivation has a relationship with self-esteem, but gender differences have no influence on Intrinsic Motivation, Extrinsic Motivation and Self-Esteem among recreational badminton players
