Abstract

Introduction: Many people enjoy the social and recreational aspects of the game and play in order to have fun. The theory of cognitive evaluation such as perceived competence indicated the sport event may satisfy a person’s desire to feel more motivation to competent within the sport. Gender disparities in perceived competence have been regularly documented in sport and physical activity situations whereas the age and year of playing experience are positively interrelated one after another. Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the moderating effect of age, gender, and year of playing experience on relationship between perceived competence and enjoyment among recreational badminton players. Methods: The study was conducted using a descriptive study using correlation technique to determine the relationship. One hundred thirty-two recreational badminton players from TARUC badminton club members, with age ranging from 18 to 26 years old (M=21.04, SD=1.53), with experience in playing badminton ranging from 1 years and above (M=6.96, SD=4.36) participated in this study. All the participants were required to answer two questionnaires in the form of Google Forms which included Self-Perception of Ability and Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES). Result and Conclusion: Findings from this study revealed that male showed higher mean self-perception ability (M=15.13, SD=2.33) compared to female (M=12.78, SD=2.41) whereas the age groups and years of playing experience showed the older age group which is 24 to 26 years old have slightly higher self-perception (M=15.50, SD=2.59) and, having longer the years of playing experience in badminton have slightly higher self-perception ability (M=14.25, SD=2.65). The relationship between athletes perceived competence and their enjoyment level were significantly and positively related, (r = .797, n = 132, p < 0.001). Regression analyses showed that there was no moderating effect with age (b = -0.02, p > 0.001), gender (b = 0.001, p > 0.001), and year of playing experience (b = 0.021, p > 0.001) in badminton on relationship between perceived competence and enjoyment among recreational badminton players. In conclusion, the moderators have not affected the relationship between perceived competence and enjoyment regardless the differences of age, gender and years of playing experience in badminton
