Abstract
Professional ethics play an important role to the performance in construction work especially from the professional consultants like Architects, Quantity Surveyors and Mechanical and Electrical/Civil and Structural Engineers. Hence, this paper aims to investigate the current standard of professional ethics performed by Architects, Quantity Surveyors and Mechanical and Electrical/Civil and Structural Engineers in Malaysia, factors that contributed to the unethical issues performed by Architects, Quantity Surveyors and Mechanical and Electrical/Civil and Structural Engineers as well as the ways to improve their professional ethics. I have selected questionnaires as my instrumentation for this research which will be approaching on the professional consultants like Architect firms, Consultant QS firms and Mechanical and Electrical, and Civil and Structural Engineer firms in Malaysia. Among so many projects in Malaysia, it has resulted that even though they are aware of the importance of professional ethics and yet the overall level of unethical behaviour conducted by the professional consultants is still high. Hence, the result of our study clearly identifies that the most common unethical behaviour conducted by the Mechanical and Electrical/Civil and Structural Engineers in Malaysia construction industry and several ways are suggested to enforce the professionalism among construction professionals so that the performance of work in construction can be improved.
