Abstract

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a technology that is currently gaining momentum within the construction industry as interoperability issue is getting more important in relative to that quality and productivity of the industry. BIM is defined as a modelling technology and associated set of processes to produce, communicate, and analyse building models throughout the entire project’s lifecycle. Although there is bound of benefits that gained from the BIM application, the local construction industry still reluctant to deploy the technology in delivery its services. Therefore, the aim of this research is to investigate the efficiency of implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology in the construction industry. The objectives of the study is to identify what is the BIM usage to facilitate the construction in different phases as well as how does BIM implement or coordinate in schedule management. Moreover, the study also helps to identify how BIM impact on the quality control on material and workmanship. The research approach was carried out based on quantitative research. Cluster random sampling method was adopted as the probability sampling technique. The questions in the questionnaire was set based on the literature review. The survey questionnaires were distributed in the construction industry within Klang Valley region. There are 120 sets of questionnaire have been collected from respondents. The data collected was analysed by using SPSS and descriptive statistics was created according to the type of questions. In addition, the result was analysed and presented in table tabulation, bar chart and pie chart for easier and clearer understanding. The findings from the data analysed was compared with the literature review based on the objectives of the study and the result prove that the construction industry do aware of the benefit brought by BIM especially the criteria of BIM can produce a new collaborative way of sharing information. Whereas, the reason why many are still reluctant to establish BIM technology in delivery its services may due to high set-up cost. In addition, the utilization of BIM in Schedule Management can minimize project delay in term of time and cost with the features of BIM such as clash detection to detect and identify problems. Furthermore, the implementation of BIM can lead to higher quality workmanship with the criteria of BIM that can reduce variations works regarding project quality. In conclusion, the findings successfully achieved the objectives at a satisfactory level. The study was recommended to expand the scope of study by involving more parties in the construction industry and to adopt qualitative research method for a more definite understanding.
