Abstract

Building information modelling (BIM) is a one-step project management system for the design and construction industry. It is the process of using information rich 3-D models as a central database to create, check and communicate project information among all stakeholders throughout the project life cycle. BIM is a shift from the traditional linear project workflow. 3D models help communicate, access, and manage the project information both graphically and in spreadsheet formats helping to develop higher quality projects. Architects, clients, contractors, quantity surveyors, and other relevant parties involved in the project can benefit from BIM. However, there is a lack of awareness about BIM technology. Hence, this research aim is to firstly identify the impact of implementation of BIM as a learning module in a quantity surveying course at higher education institutions. Next, the research aim is to identify the general consensus on the benefits of BIM implementation in quantity surveying courses. Lastly, is to identify the challenges to implementing BIM into the quantity surveying course in higher education. A quantitative approach will be used by which few people will complete the questionnaire survey to examine the general consensus on the benefits of BIM implementation in quantity surveying courses and the challenges to implementing BIM into the quantity surveying course in higher education. This research provides an understanding of the benefit and the challenge of BIM implementation in quantity surveying courses to enhance the possibility of implementing BIM as a learning module in the courses.
