Abstract

Any project has the risk of abandon occur especially in construction industry Malaysia. Among the key players in construction industry especially main contractor is important to determine the successful of the project on whether the main contractor capable to complete the construction within the specified period by employer. Some of the main contractors were abandon the project because of lack of awareness on understanding the knowledge of types of challenges faced by the contractor to manage and complete a project in construction industry Malaysia. Therefore, in this paper presents research finding on the challenges faced by contractor to manage and complete to a project in the construction industry Malaysia. This study was carried out with reference to existing literature and the adoption of a survey questionnaire distributed to 80 participants who are mainly involved in construction site with contractor firm. The questionnaire survey participants include director of company, project manager, contract manager, engineer and quantity surveyor. The questionnaires were analysed through the use of descriptive statistics. This study is applied the Software Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to ensure the validity and reliability of the result collected from respondents. Findings come from the study showed that there are high capital needed, difficult to quality control, technology adoption, lack of skilful workers and poor communication and coordination management challenges faced by the contractor to manage and complete a project in construction industry Malaysia. The identified findings from the questionnaire analysis show that the high capital need challenge is the most important challenges that can cause and have the effect to financial insufficiency to run the business. The study findings proved that borrow money from bank or external lenders can solve the high capital needed by contractor to manage and complete a project in construction industry Malaysia.
