Abstract

In Malaysia, gated and guarded community (GGC) have proliferated in recent years as a result of increased modernization and lifestyle modification. Recently, this sort of housing has become a significant consideration for the general public before acquire a home. Typically, a GGC is a type of residential neighbourhood with highly regulated entries and is frequently distinguished by a strict perimeter of walls or gates. It is shown to be done on purpose in order to deter crime, boost feelings of security, and safeguard one's family and self from unauthorised entry. Despite the fact that security has been considered one of the most enticing characteristics of gated and guarded community, multiple studies have found no substantial difference in criminal activity between gated and guarded communities and non-gated areas. How successful are GGC protective measures in deterring crime? The goal of this study is to assess residents' satisfaction with the gated and guarded community's safety level with the security measures provided, as well as identify strategies to improve the safety level of the gated and guarded community. In order to fulfil the objectives, questionnaires were issued to residents of particular gated and guarded communities to further discuss the issues from different perspectives. This study revealed that Malaysia's GGC concept is ineffective in delivering a safer living environment in areas where crime still occurs. However, the GGC has taken account of the safety measures, yet at the same time, several additional problems emerged. Thus, various measures and innovative surveillance systems must be incorporated to increase the safety standard of gated and guarded neighbourhoods.
