Abstract

Malaysia has now been recognised as one of the developing nations as evinced by the demographic changes in population, whereby the proportion of the elderly is increasing steadily from the 1970s until presently. This phenomenon has shown that our country is experiencing peak in the successful human development. However, this situation also lead to the rising demand and pressure on healthcare services and it is found out that the availability of senior living housing options is still limited in Malaysia. Therefore, it is crucial to provide an appropriate senior living housing concept for ageing in place that are able to fits the requirements and preferences among the Malaysian generations in order to enhance the elderly’s life quality. Hence, this research aims to propose an appropriate senior living housing concept in Malaysia for ageing in place. The objectives of this research are to identify the housing needs for senior living among different Malaysian generations, to examine the perceptions of senior living housing for ageing in place among different Malaysian generations and to suggest appropriate senior living housing design for ageing in place in Malaysia. In order to achieve the research objectives, literature review and questionnaire survey are conducted; whereby 104 responses had been received through online questionnaire survey. With the aid of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS), descriptive analysis and inferential analysis such as Independent Samples T-Test and Kruskal-Wallis Test were conducted to answer the objectives of this research. In brief, this research concluded that all Malaysian generations have the similar preference on housing needs which is to move to other residence and live alone or with spouse to age in place, and the level of perception and agreement on the characteristics and appropriate design of senior living housing are above average level among the Malaysian generations. Ultimately, these findings could serve as references for the construction partitioners to deliver the senior living housing concept in Malaysia
