Abstract

The safety and health issues in construction sites is always the main concern for the Malaysian construction industry especially in high-rise construction. The rapid development of the high-rise building projects has led to the rise of accident and fatality rate in Malaysian construction industry. The accidents that occurred in high-rise construction not only cause injuries and fatalities to the workers but it will also implicate the construction project such as delay of construction project and project cost overrun. The continuous growth of the high-rise building project in Malaysia shows that there is a need for effective safety and health management in high-rise construction. Hence, this research is aimed to determine the causes of accidents in high-rise construction, investigate the effects of accidents in high-rise construction and analyse the practice of safety measures in high-rise construction. Furthermore, the questionnaire survey was filled up by 72 respondents who are registered contractors from grade 1 to grade 7 within Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The data collected from the questionnaire was analysed by descriptive analysis and ANOVA through SPSS. From the findings of the research, lack of training is the main cause of accidents in high-rise construction. Moreover, the effects of accidents in high-rise construction that is most agreed by the contractors is delay of construction project. Additionally, the most effective practice of safety measures in reducing construction accidents is implementing safety and health training. In conclusion, this research is able to disseminate the causes and effects of accidents in high-rise construction to the construction parties as to raise their consciousness on the safety and health matter in high-rise construction so that appropriate actions could be taken to minimise the accidents and fatalities in high-rise construction Lastly, several effective practices suggested by this research should be implemented by the construction parties in their future project as to create a safer workplace in high-rise construction.
