Abstract

The occurrence of the building collapse has become a major concern for Malaysia's construction industry as the scale of the incident has become so alarming. Therefore, this study aims to create awareness and educate relevant construction parties on the importance of building design quality. Three objectives will be discussed in this study, which include the causes that contribute to the poor design quality of construction in Malaysia, the quality standard requirements set forth in Uniform Building By-Laws (UBBL) 1984 and lastly the performance of construction parties towards the design quality. Quantitative method is adopted to collect data from the group of people who currently work for or have worked for the contractor companies in Selangor area. A total of 107 respondents completed the questionnaire and their responses were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software and Microsoft Excel. Results for Objective 1 indicated that lack of experience of consultant staff is the major cause that contributes to the poor design quality of construction in Malaysia while ineffective use of new technology is the minor cause. For Objective 2, the study found that the quality standard requirement for the foundation of the structure should be resistant to any sulphates or any other harmful substances present in the subsoil has received the most concern, while all the building materials used for construction shall be adequately mixed and prepared, applied, used and fixed received the least concern by industry. Besides, for Objective 3, results show that the performance of consultant team has the strongest relationship with design quality at the same time the performance of sub-contractors has the weakest relationship with the design quality. In conclusion, with the findings of the research, all the construction parties have a direct relationship with the design quality of construction, so all parties should strive to improve the quality of construction
