Abstract
The construction industry plays a vital role in the economy to meet the aspiration of becoming a developed country in the years ahead. To sustain the achievement of Malaysia's aim, there is a need for a continuous supply of adequate talent. However, difficulties in recruiting local people have exacerbated the situation, resulting in practitioners in the field preferring to employ foreign workers over locals. It further leads to the fact that the number of local workers in the construction industry is not only low, but has declined significantly due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the recent year. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyse the local participation in the Malaysian construction industry. This study reviewed literature such as journals, conference proceedings, and news, and conducted a survey with 84 individuals who reside in the Klang Valley area. The results of this study have summarised the initiatives introduced by the government, factors that hinder local participation, and strategies to improve local participation
