Abstract

The COVID-19 outbreak is the global issue which created a devastating toll to employees all around the world as it has caused a significant change in the environment at work. It increased the level of employees’ concerns in terms of physical and mental health. The construction industry has been severely impacted by the pandemic and faces the issues of enhancing safety and health of its workforce. The objectives of this research study focus on (1) the challenges that impact the health and safety of the construction office workforce, (2) its root cause and (3) the effectiveness of current control and prevention measure implemented in workplace. To gather the necessary data, a thorough literature review of recently published journal, reports, news and other relevant materials was conducted. There are mainly seven challenges which includes thinking of personal and family needs, uncertainty about the future, coping with technical issues and new communication tools, risk of expose to virus and manage different workload. Five root causes were identified such as working from home (WFH), degree of organisational support available to employees, lack of social support at work, lack of social connectedness and levels of work to family conflict. The three main strategies to control and reduce the health and safety challenge are mandatory safety and health standards measured in workplaces, adoption of technology and training provided to managers and employees
