Abstract
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a method of creating, using, and sharing 3D models using digital technology that contain a variety of data that may be used by all project parties to achieve project goals. It is a transformation to an integrated digital manner from traditional practices in the construction industry. Recently, there is a rise of BIM implementation in Malaysia, but the adoption rate is slower as compared to other countries. One of the reasons is the lack of BIM competent workforce in the construction industry and this is mainly caused by the lack of BIM education. The fresh graduates generally have limited knowledge on BIM. Thus, there is a need of research on the BIM education of higher education institutions (HEI) in Malaysia. This descriptive, exploratory study examined the effectiveness of the delivery methods of BIM knowledge to the built environment students in HEI, the challenges faced by the built environment students in learning BIM and the ways to elevate BIM knowledge among built environment students in the HEI. Students and educators in the Faculty of Built Environment, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Kuala Lumpur completed self-administered questionnaires and their responses were analysed with descriptive analysis method using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). There is a total of 21 responses collected from the educators and 117 responses collected from the students. Results indicated that the BIM education in Malaysia is still in the early stages where some of the methods administered are not effective. The study also found that the students who are learning BIM knowledge suffered from high cost of BIM software, insufficient time, inadequate resources, absence of BIM qualified educators and lack of standard BIM curriculum. This study also found that the ways to elevate BIM knowledge among students are government involvement in BIM education, HEI’s responsibility to provide resources for students, BIM training for educators and the collaboration between industry and the education sector. BIM education in Malaysia is in its initial stage where challenges are faced by students. Thus, the parties mentioned above should made contributions on accelerating the BIM adoption in education sector in Malaysia. Moreover, it is hoped that this study would inspire future studies in this field with more diverse and bigger samples around Malaysia
