Abstract
Core stability is the ability to keep the vertebral column in physiologic balance by limiting displacement and maintaining structural integrity. Recent studies had shown that the stiffness of hamstrings and quadriceps was theorized to contribute to core stability. It was suggested that men would have earlier lumbopelvic movement than female, due to stiffer lower limb musculature. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between core stability and flexibility among young healthy male and female adults. A total of 45 young healthy adults (25 males and 20 females; Age M ± SD: 21.49±1.80years) participated in this study. All participants performed following test battery was performed: Sahrmann 5-Level core stability test, Goniometry measurement (knee and ankle) and Muscle Stiffness (Quadriceps and Hamstrings). Sociodemographic information which includes height, weight, and Body mass index (BMI) were also collected. The main study results showed that there is no significant relationship found between core stability and flexibility (p>0.05). However, significant difference between male and female on core stability and flexibility was found, with females performing better than their counterparts (p<0.05). In conclusion, core stability is not related to flexibility, and female have a better core stability, lower muscle stiffness and higher range of motion than males
