Abstract
Recent studies have shown that Malaysian undergraduates experienced low levels of resilience. This quantitative cross-sectional correlational study was undertaken to examine the levels of resilience and different types of academic motivation, the relationship between resilience and academic motivation, and the role of academic achievement as a moderator in the relationship between resilience and academic motivation. A total of 200 undergraduates who were recruited through convenience and snowball sampling methods participated in the study. A random selection of 100 responses were used for data analyses. Participants completed a questionnaire consisting of the Brief Resilience Scale and Academic Motivation Scale College Version. Results from descriptive analysis revealed that Malaysian undergraduates displayed a moderate resilience level and the highest extrinsic motivation as compared to amotivation and intrinsic motivation. Results from Pearson product-moment correlation analysis indicated that there was a weak positive significant correlation between resilience and academic motivation. Results from multiple linear regression showed that academic motivation significantly predicted resilience. However, academic achievement was not a significant moderator in the relationship between resilience and academic motivation. This study implies that it is crucial to design and implement various academic tasks that are able to stimulate students’ intrinsic motivation and to adopt a process-oriented attitude towards learning. Future research should replicate the study by recruiting a more diverse and larger sample size. A longitudinal research design and a more specific instrument to measure resilience should be employed in future research as well.
