Abstract
Over the years, many Southeast Asian countries’ film industries have been showing exceptional progress and making waves on the international stage. Nonetheless, the Malaysian film industry has been in a standstill position for a long haul. The strict film censorship system imposed has limited the freedom of expression as well as the creativity of the filmmakers. Hence, most films produced are constantly revolving around similar genres and storylines. This research paper critically examines the relevance of the existing Malaysia film censorship guidelines, and also seeks to identify the challenges and plights faced by fellow Malaysian filmmakers. This paper also aims to inspect the consequences of imposed strict censorship towards the right to freedom of expression. Lastly, it is also to scrutinize the role of the Malaysian government, film regulating bodies FINAS and the Film Censorship Board in fostering the growth and development of the Malaysian film industry.
