Abstract

Most studies on the gender differences in leadership styles indicated that men and women managers manage in different manners. Women's leaders tend to practise relationship-oriented leadership styletransformational leadership, while men's leaders tend to practice task-oriented leadership style - transactionally leadership. The reason for causing leadership and gender differences between men and women is probably due to they are having differences in terms of the Big Five Personality. This research aimed at investigating gender differences in leadership styles, to find out the leadership style that is having the greatest advantage, and also to study the dominant factor that caused women underrepresented in the top management in the PR (Public Relations) industry. In the study 120 PR practitioners' participants rated their own opinion via the survey questionnaires. Results have surprisingly provided a different perspective from previous studies by showing that there are no significant differences between men’s and women’s leadership styles. Both men’s leaders and women’s leaders would practice transformational leadership style or transactional leadership style as their leadership traits are similar, even though they are having some differences in terms of Big Five Personalities. In general, women and men have scored differently in terms of Big Five Personalities, however, it doesn’t show that women are generally practising relationship-oriented leadership style. In terms of leadership traits, it shows that there is no differences between men and women, thus, men’s leaders and women’s leaders practise a similar leadership style, so, they are having equal ability and advantages in leadership
