Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between social anxiety and perceived social support, along with to examine the gender differences in social anxiety and perceived social support among undergraduate students of a private university in Kuala Lumpur. A total of 160 undergraduate students (78 males, 82 females) had participated in this study. Participants were asked to complete an online survey that measured their social anxiety with Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) and perceived social support with Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Results were reported there was no significant relationship between social anxiety and perceived social support (r(158) = -.04, p > .05). No significant gender differences in social anxiety were revealed in this study (t(158) = -.84, p > .05) and perceived social support also showed no gender differences in the result t(158) = -1.57, p > .05. People with social anxiety have their own social network where they can receive social support from the circle of friendship. Both social anxiety and perceived social support should be focused on males and females. Keywords: social anxiety, perceived social support, undergraduate students
