Abstract

Ocean plastic pollution has become a global environmental crisis, with profound implications for marine ecosystems and the health of our planet. This literature review provides a comprehensive synthesis of existing research on the phenomenon of ocean plastic pollution, focusing on its sources, distribution, impacts on marine ecosystems, and potential mitigation strategies. The review reveals that plastic waste originating from land-based sources, including inadequate waste management systems and improper disposal practices, is the primary contributor to ocean plastic pollution. This waste, in the form of large plastic debris and microplastics, accumulates in marine environments, posing a significant threat to marine organisms, food webs, habitats, and biodiversity. This literature review underscores the urgent need for comprehensive and coordinated efforts to address the issue of ocean plastic pollution. Mitigation strategies should encompass reduction, proper waste management, and innovative technologies to minimize plastic waste inputs into marine environments. Additionally, public awareness and education campaigns play a vital role in fostering responsible consumer behavior and promoting sustainable practices. By understanding the sources, distribution, and impacts of ocean plastic pollution, policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders can work together to develop effective solutions to protect marine ecosystems and ensure a sustainable future for our oceans.
