Abstract

Background: Overweight and obesity rates have continuously risen in recent years. The prevalence of obesity is positively correlated with sugar consumption. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) level of sugar intake and its correlation. The relationships between socio-demographic characteristics (gender and ethnicity) and KAP levels of sugar intake among the participants were examined. Methods: A total of 68 participants that meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria were chosen by convenience sampling method to complete a questionnaire regarding sugar intake that had four sections (sociodemographic status, knowledge, attitude, and practice) via Google form. Results: An acceptable Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.6 to 0.7 and all KAP domains with values of >0.800 were obtained. The participants had good knowledge (52.06 ± 14.20%), attitude (95.30 ± 10.99%), and practice (50.89 ± 20.57%) regarding sugar intake. The results suggest that Indian women had the greatest KAP levels. A statistically significant difference in correlation between knowledge and gender was discovered (p=0.046). Only a weak positive correlation between knowledge and attitude was found to be a statistically significant difference (p=0.016). Conclusion: This study has offered some information on the KAP level of sugar intake. Health promotion campaigns and public awareness talks should be held to enhance the KAP levels of adults about sugar intake in order to reduce the incidence of obesity and the prevalence of health concerns related to obesity. Keywords: sugar intake, knowledge, attitude, practice, correlation
