Abstract

Background: Performance profiling is important in this sport because it can help in building self-awareness towards coaches or athletes as well as it could make the athletes to identify or get to know themself better and know where to improve for the team's weaknesses. The objective of this study was to examine the psychological skills profile of Malaysian underwater hockey players based on gender, age groups, level of participation, years of experience and playing position. Methods: Psychological Characteristics related to Sport Performance Questionnaire (CPRD) was used to evaluate the psychological skills of the participants along with demographic data in this study. A total of 32 Malaysian underwater hockey players participated, aged 11 to 35 years old with different levels of participation, years of experience, and playing position. For descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, SPSS was used. Results: This study showed that the stress control and influence of performance dimension were higher than the other subscale among Malaysian underwater hockey players. There were no statistically significant differences in psychological skills between genders (p>0.05).There was a significant difference in psychological skills between age groups (p<0.05). There was a significant difference in psychological skills between levels of participation (p<0.05). There was a significant difference in psychological skills = between years of experience (p<0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in psychological skills between playing positions (p>0.05). Conclusion: The Malaysian Underwater Hockey players average mean score on the CPRD questionnaire was generally skewed towards the neutral choice. Future research should compare other countries based on team ranking and performances by CPRD questionnaire including home country Malaysia. Future research is able to improve underwater hockey sports by obtaining a larger number of participants for comparison with other teams.
