Abstract

The study aimed to examine the effect of plyometric training on vertical jump performance (VJP) and dynamic balance (DB) among recreational basketball players. Twenty-four recreational basketball players, age (22.17 ± 0.56), were divided into an experimental group (EG, n=12) and a control group (CG, n=12). Both groups underwent 2 tests which were the Countermovement Jump Test and Star Excursion Balance Test before and after a 6-week intervention. All subjects remained in their regular recreational basketball activity during the intervention period and only EG was supplemented with plyometric training. The plyometric training consists of a set of exercises with 1 minute rest between each set of exercises. Subjects in EG needed to attend the training for 3 times a week. Results showed that EG improved significantly in VJP (p=0.039) and DB (p=0.019 on dominant leg, p=0.005 on non-dominant leg), but not for CG. Also, significant difference found in VJP (p=0.044) between CG and EG in post-test but does not show any significant difference in BD (p=0.058 on dominant leg, p=0.062 on non-dominant leg) between CG and EG in post-test. The study concludes that plyometric training implemented for 6 weeks on recreational basketball players improves the VJP and DB.
