Abstract

The purposes of this study were to investigate the influence of leg-dominance on postural balance in Klang valley collegiate badminton players, and to analyse the association of the modified Star Excursion Balance Test (mSEBT) with the stability index of the Biodex Balance System (SI-BBS) to evaluate postural balance. A total of 25 collegiate badminton players (male=13; female=12; age=20.6±1.26; height=165.34±8.67 cm; weight=60.1±9.91 kg; years of badminton training experience=10.4±2.61 years) took part in this study. All participants reported right leg dominance. The participants were tested on the modified Star Excursion Balance Test (mSEBT) and the stability index of the Biodex Balance System (SI-BSS) for both dominant and non-dominant legs. Data analysis showed that there were no significant differences between the dominant and non-dominant legs when tested by the mSEBT or SI-BBS. Therefore, comparison between limbs can be used in orthopaedic evaluation and clinical practices to compare an injured limb with the uninjured limb, where the uninjured limb serves as a control providing reference values, and also helping to determine the efficiency of rehabilitation. There were also no strong correlations between the mSEBT and the SI-BBS. The mSEBT or the SI-BBS cannot be used as the sole instrument to assess postural balance.
