Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of immediate pre-event preferred music genres on the blocking reaction time and accuracy, arousal, and heart rate change of elite Malaysian dodgeball players. 25 subjects of age 24.3 (±3.46) years with at least 1 year of National Dodgeball Championship (NDC) experience and 3 years of playing experience, as well as playing for the top 4 dodgeball clubs in Klang Valley were recruited as participants. All participants went through a 3-week process of a familiarization, pre-test, and post-test. The data collection included music preference information, SMARTfit mini on frame for reaction time and accuracy, Polar H7 for heart rate change, and Sports Emotional Questionnaire for arousal levels, with an additional 1 song music intervention in the post test. Results showed that there were significant improvements in both reaction time and accuracy as well as a significant increase in heart rate change for all preferred music genres. Thus, it was concluded that pre-event preferred music was able improve blocking reaction time and accuracy among elite Malaysian dodgeball players.
