Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of Self-Talk and Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) on Reaction time and compare the effect between Self-Talk and PMR on reaction time among volleyball players. A total of 24 male volleyball players between 18 – 24 years old who have 5 years of experience and above in TARUMT with no prior experience of any relaxation techniques and self-talk training (age=20.50 ± 1.29 years; weight= 67.21 ± 5.39kg; height=172.88 ± 2.84cm; years of experience=6.87 ± 1.33) took part in this study and were divided into control group (n=8), PMR group (n=8) and Self-talk group (n=8). However, unlike the control group, which received no training during the intervention period, the PMR and Self-talk group had 6 weeks of training. PMR group received a PMR training while Self-talk group received self-talk training. The training was a six week training that had one session of training per week. Using the Smartfit reaction time test, the subjects in three groups were subjected to pre-testing and post-testing for reaction time. The findings indicated that there was no significant difference in control group (p=.197). However, there was a significant difference in PMR group (p=.021) and there was a significant difference in Self-talk group (p=0.003). As a results, college students might benefit from 6 week PMR and Self-talk training to increase their reaction time as a volleyball player.
