Abstract

The research focuses on the implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the construction industry in Malaysia. BIM is a technology and process used to manage construction projects collaboratively. However, major issue is the lack of BIM standards for model integration and management, particularly when it comes to interdisciplinary teams. Additionally, ownership of BIM data is a concern that needs to be addressed through legal means such as copyright laws. Therefore, to tackle this problem, these research study will be carried out to identify the advantage and disadvantage of using BIM in construction industry, analysis the challenges when using the BIM in construction industry and to investigate methods that can be implemented to encourage more practitioners to adopt BIM technologies in Malaysian construction industry The methodologies that will be applied for this research is starts with using literature review to analysis the challenges when using the BIM in construction industry and to investigate methods that can be implemented to encourage more practitioners to adopt BIM technologies in Malaysian construction industry based on previous researches. This is followed by distributions of questionnaire forms towards the construction industry professional for Building Information Modelling (BIM) in in Kuala Lumpur for the first, second and third objective. The gathered data will be assessed using Cronbach's Alpha and descriptive analysis. Once the data has been coded and screened, both questionnaire survey data and correlation analysis will be analyzed using the Statistical Packages for Social Science (SPSS) software, in addition to descriptive analysis. The findings indicate that the most agreed advantage and disadvantage using BIM in construction industry is higher cost of the software and higher training cost, need some time to introduce BIM software to client and using models to estimate costs. In addition, the findings for second objective indicate that the challenge when using the BIM in Malaysian construction, the licensing issues, high cost of application and lack of national standard are most agreed by the majority of respondents. Lastly, the methods that can be implemented to encourage more practitioners to adopt BIM technologies in Malaysian construction industry is environment-related strategy, company can train the employee to learn BIM software and doing some research on the BIM software is most agreed by the majority of respondents.
