Abstract

The growing demand for renewable energy sources has propelled the wind energy sector to new heights in electricity generation. In this research, the limitations of traditional rectifier topologies are addressed, which require high frequencies to attain low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). This causes significant electromagnetic interference, high voltage and current stress, and switching losses. To solve this issue, multilevel power converters are proposed, which achieve an optimized performance of the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) by developing a 5L-VR and its respective control algorithm. This project aims to compare the performance of the proposed five-level topology with the conventional Three-level Vienna Rectifier (3L-VR) for PMSG control. To accomplish this, a 5L-VR is constructed in MATLAB Simulink, and its feasibility is studied. The control strategy used to control a 5L-VR is variable band Hysteresis Current Control (HCC), whereas conventional HCC is utilized for controlling the 3L-VR. Results demonstrate that the 5L-VR outperforms the 3L-VR in terms of transient response, speed error, and DC-Link voltage. Addiionally, significant improvements have been achieved in current error, resulting in a remarkable enhancement of 15.56% and 81.36% in THD for both low-speed and high-speed operations. These advancements contribute to the overall superior performance of the 5L-VR."
