Abstract

A renewable energy system has been developed and integrated into the transmission line. Electric power consumption in Malaysia is currently increasing due to the increase in consumers and industrial use. Malaysia has a considerable opportunity to produce large-scale solar power due to its tropical position. Due to the variable nature of renewable energy, to optimise the performance of the Photovoltaic (PV) system, it is necessary to use a Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT) controller and an energy storage system that is equipped with a reliable power management control system. The MPPT controller ensures that the PV system operates at its maximum power point, while the energy storage system manages the power flow to ensure the reliable operation of the PV system. There are some techniques, methods, tools and technologies that have been used for this research, namely, perturb and observe (P&O) MPPT, incremental conductance (INC) MPPT, fuzzy logic MPPT and battery energy storage system (BESS). Simulated results were analysed to compare the performance of the algorithms. It was found that the perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm is the best choice due to it can reach the MPP specified (101.6 kW), has a fast response time (0.31 s) to reach the maximum power point and has low complexity of implementation compared to others. Also, the proposed system was analysed and found that it can reduce the emission of 29.83 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
