Abstract

In a wider literary corpus, Malaysian Literature is not much explored compared to literature of other countries such as popular works found within African Literature, American Literature and Japanese Literature. The drama genre, specifically, is one aspect of Malaysian literature that has received minimal exposure despite its significance. This project will be based on one playwright/ actor; Jit Murad and three of his works, Visits, Gold Rain and Hailstones and Spilt Gravy on Rice. I intend to use Feminism theory and support it with the subconcepts of othering, stereotyping, inequality and double standards to explore the representation of female characters in Jit Murad’s Visits, Spilt Gravy On Rice and Gold Rain and Hailstones. The female characters in these plays represent and reflect the role of females within the Malaysian society as well. The findings reveal how Jit Murad had directly implied the real-life issues of society such as discrimination towards gender, identity crisis and patriarcal society crisis as evidently found in the texts. These texts provide a deeper insight, thus invoking a sense of critical awareness towards the various roles of women within the Malaysian society.
