Abstract

his study investigated the factors influencing whistleblowing motives among employees in Malaysia. The research examined the impact of co-worker ethical behaviour, individual traits, ethical alertness, Machiavellianism trait, psychological safety, moral intensity, organisational transparency, perceived social support, personal sense of responsibility, ethical leadership, and organisational culture on whistleblowing motives, mediated by psychological safety. The study used a quantitative approach and the findings indicated that all the hypotheses were supported, and moral intensity was a significant predictor of whistleblowing motives, explaining approximately 42% of the variability in the outcome. The study recommends that organisations create an ethical work environment that promotes co-worker ethical behaviour, psychological safety, an individual obligation to divulge, and ethical alertness to encourage whistleblowing behaviour. Additionally, the study highlights the need for organisations to create policies and procedures to prevent the potential misuse of whistleblowing by individuals with Machiavellian personalities.
