Abstract

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”) were adopted in 2015 by the United Nations (UN) with a strong economic, social, and environmental focus to strengthen the three dimensions of sustainable development and protect the planetary and human future. While industry, innovation, and infrastructure (Goal 9) as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are crucial for achieving sustainable development through a comprehensive and integrated approach, with collaborative effects from academia, government policies and corporations. By realising the important role of corporations played in achieving Sustainable Development Goals, including Goal 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, the 2030 agenda is urging corporations to utilize their imagination and innovation in tackling the obstacles related to sustainable development. This study intends to examine the determinants or influencing factors on firm engagement with industry, innovation, and infrastructure, which is Goal 9 from the Sustainable Development Goals. Thus, transformational leadership, employee innovative work behaviour and employee engagement are adopted as the variables that would affect firm engagement with industry, innovation, and infrastructure. With that, a quantitative and cross-sectional study was conducted through the collection of primary data via electronic questionnaire involving 220 full-time employees in Malaysia to answer the research questions and objectives. Data obtained were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and Partial Least Square – Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM as known as SmartPLS). The research findings revealed that transformational leadership (TL) could impact firm engagement with industry, innovation, and infrastructure (FEIII) directly or indirectly through employee innovative work behaviour (EIWB) and employee engagement (EE). From a practical perspective, the research findings have highlighted the importance of a transformational leaders in fostering employee innovative work behaviour and employee engagement, as well as enhancing firm engagement with industry, innovation, and infrastructure (SDG9).
