Abstract

IBS technologies were introduced to Malaysia in 1960s aimed to improve the working environment of the construction industry of Malaysia. However, the lack of IBS technologies adoption in private sector projects remain low despite the outstanding benefits that largely avoid the issues arise from conventional method. To tackle this issue, this research is conducted to encourage the implementation of IBS – Precast Concrete System among the contractor firms in Malaysia. By providing a comprehensive understanding of both the benefits and challenges of IBS adoption while offering actionable solutions to address these challenges. It is then followed by the questionnaire distribution to 441 of IBS contractor firms in Klang Valley. The collected data will then be analysed by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. The collected data are regrouping according to three different sizes which are “small” for Grade 1 to 3, “medium” for Grade 4 and 5, finally “large” for Grade 6 and 7. Quantitative data analysis includes Descriptive Statistic – Frequencies and Compare Means – One-Way ANOVA. Tables of data and bar charts are included in data interpretation for better data presentation. Moreover, data collected from open-ended questions as qualitative data are included in discussion parts of quantitative data as a elaboration or comment from respondents. Which greatly perform the data collected from the questionnaire distributed. “Superior quality control” and “High construction speed” were identified as the most significant benefits among different sizes of companies. Therefore, "high capital cost for labour training programs", “troublesome logistic planning” and “lacking access to specialized 70 equipment and machinery” identified as the most significant challenges by the small, medium and large size of xii companies respectively. Joint Venture identified as an effective approach to overcome the barriers of IBS implementation. This research acts as useful reference to promote the implementation of IBS – Precast Concrete System for future projects in Malaysia.
