Abstract

Gender inequality remains a significant challenge in the construction industry, where women continue to face numerous barriers in their professional advancement. This research focuses on exploring the barriers to women's involvement in the construction industry, understanding the impact of these barriers, and proposing strategies for improving women's career development in this field. The targeted population for this study comprises stakeholders in the construction industry, including contractors, engineers, architects, as well as construction-related academic individuals such as lecturers and students. The study specifically concentrates on the Klang Valley region in Malaysia. A non-probability sampling method was employed to select a representative sample of respondents by using questionnaire survey. 97 respondents were received and become the collected data to be analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Descriptive statistics, spearman correlation techniques and Mann-Whitney U Test will be used in order to achieve the three objectives of this research. Based on the findings, culture and working environment, family commitment and sexual harassment are the top three challenges and barriers to women in the construction industry. Moreover, for objective two, shortfall of workers and talent pool, low demands for the involvement of young female people and work-family life conflict are the top three impacts of these barriers on women in the construction industry. For objective three, it is found that promote work-life balance policy, promote construction-related programs and improve and restrict the laws and regulations are the top three ways to enhance women’s involvement in the construction industry. Hence, the findings from this study will provide valuable insights for industry stakeholders, policymakers, and practitioners, leading to the development of effective strategies to promote gender equality and empower women in the construction field.
