Abstract

The construction industry's rising contribution to harmful emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), and the need for sustainable building practices are pressing concerns. In Malaysia, the low adoption of green building practices may be attributed to a lack of public understanding and awareness. This study aims to identify the benefits of green building, the barriers in adoption of green building in Malaysia and the factors affecting the willingness to pay for green building. The methodologies that will be applied in this research begins with using a literature review to determine the benefits and barriers of green buildings, as well as the factors affecting the willingness to pay for it. This is followed by distribution of questionnaire forms to the public in Kuala Lumpur and 140 responses received. The data have been analysed using SPSS. The analysis consists of descriptive analysis, Cronbach’s Alpha Reliability Test, Pearson’s Correlation Test and One-Sample T-Test. The result of this research shows that the ability to promote good health is the most important benefit that the green building can bring, and the barrier and factor affecting the willingness to pay will be the cost. However, there is some limitations of this research such as the collected responses are unable to represent whole population and also there is limited responses. Thus, an improvement on the sample size and effective time management must be taken into consideration for future studies.
