Abstract
The construction industry, a vital driver of economic growth, is also a substantial contributor to environmental challenges. Effective construction waste management practices are imperative for sustainable development. This dissertation presents a comprehensive study focused on the current state of construction waste management practices among contractors in Malaysia. The research aims to identify feasible strategies for enhancing environmental-friendliness and addresses the associated challenges in the Malaysian construction context. In addressing the first objective, an analysis of contractors' perspectives reveals varying degrees of implementation of different waste management practices. Landfill utilization emerges as the most prevalent, while illegal dumping exhibits a lower occurrence rate. The second objective identifies key avenues for enhancing environmental-friendly practices. "Waste Sorting and Segregation" is identified as the most feasible strategy, followed closely by "Lean Construction" and "Recycling." Conversely, practices such as "Upcycling" and "Reduction" received lower feasibility scores, suggesting the need for targeted interventions. The third objective sheds light on the challenges faced by contractors in adopting environmentally friendly waste management practices. Issues such as a lack of regulatory support and financial constraints emerge as significant hurdles, emphasizing the necessity of government initiatives and financial incentives. This dissertation contributes significantly to the discourse on sustainable construction waste management practices by providing empirical evidence. The findings offer actionable insights for contractors, policy makers, and researchers, facilitating the alignment of the construction industry with environmental conservation objectives. By highlighting feasible strategies and addressing prevalent challenges, this study charts a path towards more sustainable construction practices in Malaysia, thereby promoting environmental responsibility while supporting economic growth.
