Abstract

This research is carried out to study the application of tools and technologies in Malaysian quantity surveying practices. The objectives of this study are to identify the types of tools and technologies used for quantity surveying practices, to investigate the benefits or advantages of applying these tools and technologies for quantity surveying purposes and to assess the business performance of Malaysian quantity surveying companies in terms of cost, time and profit after implementing these tools and technologies. To achieve the objective of this research, more than 300 sets of questionnaires are sent out to Developers, Architects, Quantity Surveyors and Contractors in the construction industry as the target of 100 sets of questionnaires are required in this research. The result showed that the respondents used tools and technologies in the project such as Information Communication Technology (ICT), Building Information Modelling (BIM), 3D laser scanning technology, CostX, Cubit etc. The data collection method in this study was secondary data collection and primary data collection. The data analysis technique applied in this research was descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation. Based on the mean and standard deviation obtained, the respondents agreed that enhancing time and accuracy, reducing the time taken for measurement, improving the efficiency and consistency in the measurement process etc are the benefits of implementing tools and technologies and they can improve the business performance of Malaysian quantity surveying companies. The limitation of this research was response fatigue as the questionnaire was lengthy and repetitive. Thus, the future study may consider to design the questionnaire more creatively.
