Abstract

This thesis explores the intricate interplay between the representation of national identity in Malaysian films and their reception on the international stage. It grapples with the complex task of defining Malaysian national identity within the cinematic medium, investigating the key elements contributing to the classification of a film as Malaysian national film, addressing the challenges inherent in conveying this identity, and proposing strategies to amplify international recognition. Recent years have witnessed a handful of Malaysian films and filmmakers, representing diverse ethnic backgrounds, gaining prominence at prestigious international film festivals. However, if the role of Malaysian culture and national identity contribute to the success of the films or how it contributed are still a question. Therefore, in-depth literature review conducted, delving into critical insights and scholarly discourse pertaining to Malaysian cinema and its nuanced representation of national identity. The historical context of national cinemas, the evolving nature of Malaysian national identity, and the transformative impact of independent digital cinema on redefining Malaysian identity are explored. It further examines the challenges inherent in conveying national identity and highlights the achievements of other Asian films in garnering international acclaim. The researcher employs a qualitative research methodology of semi-structured and in-depth interviews with Malaysian filmmakers to unravel the multifaceted dimensions of the impact of the Malaysian national identity and culture presented in Malaysian cinema on the global stage. Anticipated findings aim to identify the core elements and effective strategies central to the portrayal of Malaysian identity in films, encompassing cultural facets, traditions, and deeply ingrained values. The implications of this research extend far and wide, offering practical guidance for filmmakers seeking to enhance the global appeal of Malaysian cinema. Furthermore, it provides policy recommendations to strengthen the Malaysian film industry. Beyond these applications, this study contributes significantly to the broader discourse on cultural representation in the realm of global cinema, enriching ongoing discussions on the shaping and projection of identities within the diverse landscape of international filmmaking.
