Abstract

This research investigates the landscape of Chinese films in the Malaysian market, analyzing their viability, challenges, and opportunities. Through qualitative interviews with film practitioners and stakeholders, it addresses three key questions: (1) Chinese film viability in the Malaysian market, (2) challenges hindering their success, and (3) strategies to overcome these challenges. Findings reveal the significance of Chinese New Year releases and streaming platforms, alongside growing interest in Chinese culture. Challenges encompass language barriers, limited budgets, quality standards, and audience preferences. The study explores theoretical implications using World System Theory and concludes with recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders, contributing valuable insights into the dynamic Chinese film industry in Malaysia.
