Abstract

Supporting characters have always been deemed as insignificant supporting roles with less contribution to the story compared to the protagonist. Yet, they all played an important role that contributed to shaping the protagonist into a better character who conquers the journey. This study aims to identify the portrayals of archetypes of the three supporting characters (Chloe Decker, Amenadiel, Dr. Linda Martin) in the show using Jungian’s 12 archetypal figures, analyse the contributions of their roles that helped the development of Lucifer as a character, and explore the symbolic representation behind the portrayal of the characters that can be learned from the viewers. Using Jungian’s archetypal figures as the base theory, an analysis of the supporting characters in the series Lucifer will be carried out to identify their archetypal figures and analyse their contribution in shaping Lucifer as a character as the series progresses, as well as the symbolic representation of the characters that can be learned from the viewers in this study. In general, the findings reveal that the supporting characters play a significant role, serving as The Hero, The Ruler, The Magician, The Caregiver, and The Sage. The analysis also pointed to the significance of the supporting characters in contributing to the character development of Lucifer. This leads to the discussion of the symbolic representation behind the portrayal of the characters, where it explores the issues and relationships that are closely related to reality and can be learned by the viewers of the series. The anticipation of this analysis of supporting characters hopes to encourage further exploration into a deeper understanding of the characters, their importance and contributions to the development of story narration, and symbolic representation that reveals reality issues that can be relatable by viewers in both literary and film studies.
