Abstract

This study investigates the attitudes towards English accents among students in TARUMT, specifically examining experiences of discrimination, the impact of accents on teacher-student communication, and strategies for improving communication in the presence of diverse accents. Through a mixed-method approach, including open-ended questions, video analysis, and a structured questionnaire, data was collected from 10 students majoring in English studies with an average command of the language, as evidenced by their Band 4 score on the MUET English Examination. The findings reveal a preference for localized accents over native-like accents for clarity and understanding in educational settings. While instances of discrimination based on accents were reported, they were not pervasive. The study suggests that accent familiarity plays a crucial role in effective language teaching and learning, and that students perceive diverse accents as assets in a multicultural classroom. These insights call for educational strategies that address accent bias and promote inclusive language education.
