Abstract
The study aimed to examine the comparison of a 6-week percentage of 1RM and RPE-based powerlifting training programme on muscular strength and skeletal muscle mass among active powerlifters. Twenty-two active powerlifters were divided into two groups, experimental group (EG, n=11), aged 23.09 ± 5.56 years and control group (CG, n=11), aged 23.64 ± 4.39 years. Both groups underwent a series of test such as the Inbody570 body composition analyser, 1RM Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift before and after the 6-week intervention. All subjects went through a powerlifting programme where the experimental group (EG) were performing the percentage of 1RM powerlifting training programme and the control group (CG) were performing the RPE-based powerlifting training programme. The percentage of 1RM powerlifting training programme consists of 5 exercises where it involved 6 different sets of training volume and intensity and the exercises remained the same throughout the 6-weeks of intervention. Results showed that EG and CG improved significantly on 1RM Squat (p<0.05) in the post-test. Whereas in the pre and post-test mean scores comparison for skeletal muscle mass (SMM), 1RM Squat, 1RM Bench Press and 1RM Deadlift between EG and CG, both groups improved significantly on 1RM Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift (p<0.05). The study concluded that percentage of 1RM and RPE-based powerlifting training programme on active powerlifters showed improvement especially on the 1RM Squat in the control group (CG) where they performed the RPE-based powerlifting training.
