Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the implementation of play-based learning in Kuala Lumpur preschools through recognising the strategies and challenges experienced by preschool teachers working in a play-based school setting. Respondents participated in an interview on the strategies and methods that they used to incorporate play-based learning in their classroom, as well as the challenges they faced during the process. The results showed that the strategies utilised by preschool teachers were varied, practical, and capable of enhancing children's developmental outcomes in a play based learning classroom. Preschool teachers confront most challenges when engaging children in outdoor and pretend play, parents' misunderstanding of the concept of play-based learning, and integrating children with special needs into a classroom setting, which may be resolved through teacher’s training. This study has implications in that strategies utilised by preschool teachers to enable an effortless implementation of play-based learning in the classroom, as well as specific solutions are obvious in contributing to challenges when implementing play-based learning in a classroom.
