Abstract

Table tennis is a game that requires outstanding hand-eye coordination to counter the high ball speed in the sport. The implementation of external noise on hand-eye coordination has been done on other fields but not in the sport setting, and minimal studies have been done using the table tennis setup. Therefore, this study is aimed to identify the impact of varying levels of external noise on hand-eye coordination performance among recreational table tennis players as well as comparing between genders. Thirty male (n=16; mean age = 21.44 ± 1.15; weight = 64.75 ± 8.82; height ; 173.13 ± 5.76) and female (n=14; mean age = 21.93 ± 1.21; weight = 56.00 ± 13.91; height = 157.5 ± 6.04) recreational table tennis players were recruited, and they underwent the entire study protocol. All the participants underwent the same procedures but were separated while performing analysis. The familiarization of the hand-eye coordination test was conducted. The experimental process was the hand-eye coordination test under three different conditions, (i) quiet condition; (ii) 70dB noise level condition; (iii) 100dB noise level condition with 3 trials each. Results showed that there were no significant differences between different noise level conditions as well as comparing between genders. In conclusion, varying levels of external noise does not have significant influence on hand-eye coordination performance, specifically on recreational table tennis players
