Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of flywheel eccentric overload training and fast eccentric resistance training on 1RM back squat among resistance trained university students. A total of 30 resistance trained university students were randomly assigned to a flywheel eccentric overload training group (n = 15; age (years) = 22±1.65; weight (kg) = 67.61±8.80; height (cm) = 172.83±6.37; years of experience in resistance training = 2.70±1.40; duration of resistance training per week (hours) = 5.53±0.92, fast eccentric resistance training group (n = 15; age (years) = 22.07±1.03; weight (kg) = 66.77±4.80; height (cm) = 172.23±4.13; years of experience in resistance training = 2.70±1.69; duration of resistance training per week (hours) = 5.60±0.99. A 6-week intervention for both groups, where flywheel eccentric overload training group will undergo flywheel training and fast eccentric resistance training group will undergo resistance training. The subjects were tested on 1RM back squat performance. The data analysis shows there is a significant improvement for 1RM back squat performance in both group (p < .001). However, there is no significant differences between flywheel eccentric overload training group and fast eccentric resistance training group (p > .05). Hence, this implies that flywheel eccentric overload training is not superior to fast eccentric resistance training in improving lower body strength
