Abstract

The development of a IoT-based energy monitoring system for home electricity usage is presented in this paper. The system consists of an IoT sensor node where power readings are taken, server where all communications are established, and cloud that store data. The sensor node is a low-powered Bluetooth 4.0 enabled microcontroller-based device that read the electric current flowing through the home appliance which is being monitored. The current reading will be converted into power in unit kW, then send the data to the server using Bluetooth 4.0 or BLE, power efficient wireless communication for further processing. The data will be processed into useful information such as energy estimation, energy usage, and cost of electricity for a particular appliance to the smartphone user via cloud storage. The cloud is an online storage of IoT data that can be accessed by smartphone. Also, the system is capable of controlling appliance by switching it on or off depend on user decision on smartphone using internet. The sensor node is able to monitor the electricity usage of a home appliances with accuracy expressed in error percentage of 16.25% and consumed average power of 293.64mW using Bluetooth 4.0 communication.
