Abstract

The relationships between motivation, mental toughness, and stress have been shown to be associated with novice triathlete in Malaysia. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the motivation, mental toughness and stress among novice triathlete in Malaysia. This quantitative research employed the online survey questionnaire method for data collection. A total of 140 novice triathlete (120 males and 20 females; M age = 39.807; SD = 9.106) from Malaysia triathlon community. Participants completed three inventories which were the sport motivation scale (SMS-II) (Pelletier et al., 2013), consisted of 18-items, Sport Mental Toughness questionnaires (SMTQ) by Sheard, Golby, & van Wersch (2009) consisted of 30 items, and lastly the Perceived Stress questionnaires (PSQ) by (Levenstein et al., 1993) which consistsed of 14 items. Additional demographic data collected were gender, ages, years of sport in experiences, and year of competitive in sport. Descriptive statistics on the athlete’s demographic data were analysed. Inferential statistics (Pearson correlation coefficient, Independent T-test and One-way ANOVA) were used to analyse the data. This study indicated that is a statistically significant difference in motivation levels based on demographic factors. However, there were no significant differences in mental toughness or perceived stress related to most demographic factors, except for age, where the significance was borderline. Additionally, significant correlations were found between motivation and both stresses, as well as mental toughness among novice triathletes.
