Abstract

Urbanization plays a crucial role in societal and economic advancement, but it also presents significant challenges to sustainable development and livability. This dissertation examines the relationship between urbanization and urban planning, focusing on the benefits, challenges, and strategies to mitigate issues in rapidly expanding cities. The research uses both a literature review and a structured questionnaire survey conducted among 148 residents in Kuala Lumpur to explore key urban planning concepts. The findings highlight the advantages of urban planning, such as improved living standards, better educational facilities, and economic growth, while identifying major challenges like traffic congestion, environmental degradation, and public health risks. Data were collected via a structured questionnaire survey and analyzed using descriptive statistics and reliability testing (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.86). The study also explores strategies like urban greening, sustainable transportation, and shared parking as mitigating solutions. Recommendations are provided for policymakers and urban planners to adopt more sustainable and inclusive approaches to address these challenges effectively. This research contributes to understanding the role of urban planning in creating resilient, equitable, and environmentally sustainable urban spaces.
