Abstract
As global awareness of climate change and the need for sustainable energy solutions grow, solar energy has emerged as a viable alternative to traditional sources. In Malaysia, with its abundant sunlight, solar energy presents significant potential. However, adoption rates remain low due to economic, technical, and informational barriers. The study aims to: (1) identify the primary advantages perceived by homeowners, (2) investigate the barriers faced to solar energy adoption, and (3) explore the overall level of acceptance of solar energy integration among homeowners. Using a mixed-method approach, data was gathered through a survey of homeowners in Kuala Lumpur and a review of existing literature on renewable energy trends. Findings show that homeowners recognize the economic and environmental benefits of solar energy, such as reduced electricity bills, enhanced property values, and lower carbon emissions. Peer influence and noveltyseeking behaviour were notable motivators for younger homeowners. However, significant barriers include high initial costs, limited access to reliable installers, and gaps in technical knowledge and government incentives. Financial constraints were most pronounced among lower-income households, while knowledge gaps affected all demographic groups. Despite these challenges, there is a positive overall attitude towards solar energy, with higher acceptance observed among younger and higher-income homeowners. To promote broader adoption, the study recommends increasing public awareness, enhancing access to government incentives, and improving the availability of certified installers. By addressing these barriers, Malaysia can further its transition towards a sustainable energy future. This research contributes to literature on renewable energy adoption and provides actionable insights for policymakers and developers to encourage wider integration of solar energy into residential sectors.
