Abstract

When a relatively new building is not being used to its full capacity, things must have changed in its initial purpose at a certain time. The number of abandoned buildings in Klang Valley is the reason that is being focused rather than other states or areas. The purpose of this research studies is to investigate the causes and their negative effects of abandoned buildings on society, the environment and the economy, and provide strategies to use these abandoned buildings for a better purpose. The study methodology includes distributing survey questionnaires to a targeted group who living in Klang Valley, and receiving 68 responds via an online survey using Google Forms. Descriptive analysis and inferential statistics were subsequently utilised to analyse the data collected. The results of the descriptive analysis showed that the level of agreement of respondents tended high regarding poor management as the most common causing buildings abandonment. Besides, the independent samples t-test result indicates that most of the effect of abandoned buildings on society, and the environmenthave have no significant difference between the two groups of respondent in which those concerned and not concerned about abandoned buildings. Furthermore, the Pearson’s correlation analysis also will be used to analyse the relationship between between the respondent’s awareness and the effects of abandoned buildings on the economy. The result shows most of the effects on the economy have no significant difference between the two variables. Moreover, the descriptive analysis showed that the level of agreement of respondents tended high regarding encouraged redevelopment of abandoned buildings for new functions as the good strategies to address the issue of abandoned buildings. However, it is essential to comprehend the limitations of this research, which include a low response rate, potential sample bias, and time constraints. Thus, it is supposed to improve in future studies, including efficient time management and utilisation of different methodological approach to analysis data. This also ensures that abandoned buildings can be properly reused.
