Abstract

The rapid urbanization in Malaysia has intensified the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, exacerbating public health issues, energy consumption, and environmental degradation. This research aims to raise awareness about the UHI effect and evaluate strategies to mitigate it. Specifically, it will identify the factors contributing to the UHI effect, assess its impacts on public health and energy consumption, and explore the effectiveness of green roof technology as a mitigation measure. A questionnaire was distributed to relevant stakeholders in the construction industry to gather primary data on their perceptions and experiences. The study reveals that the most significant UHI impacts include adverse effects on public health and increased energy consumption. The research also highlights that green roof technology can effectively mitigate these impacts, though its adoption faces challenges. The findings are intended to guide stakeholders, policymakers, and industry practitioners in developing strategies to combat the UHI effect, enhance public awareness, and promote the use of green roof technology. By addressing these aspects, the research contributes to improving urban sustainability and environmental quality in Malaysia.
